Frith Johnson knew from a very early age that she wanted to be an artist – took art at school and went on to graduate from Witwatersrand Technikon South Africa in Fine Art (Ndip 3 years) and then in Ceramic Design (Ndip 3 years).
Her career began producing prototypes for a ceramic ornament company and she quickly moved on to setting up her own business producing promotional gifts and designing a wide variety of things including decals for walls and floor tiles.
When she had her first child in 1998 she moved to the UK where she became a full time Mum, but quenched her thirst for art organising art lessons at her children’s schools and painted murals as a side line. She also hit the books again and in 2010 became a qualified clinical aromatherapist but by 2014 the call to be a full time artist could no longer be ignored…
In September 2014 she took on a studio as part of the Raw Gallery Studios in Eastleigh and her work took a huge leap forwards. She had her first solo exhibition in September 2015 at The Courthouse in Eastleigh. In January 2016 she moved to The Yard Studios in Winchester where there are approximately 20 working artists providing a great deal of inspiration.
In June 2016 she set up a ceramic studio to work alongside her painting which influences her ceramic design and vice versa.
With the escalating costs of universities and tertiary study Frith took on a part time job as picture framer to support her children. As from November 2018, she now exhibits her work permanently at the Frith Dimension Gallery in Hiltingbury Rd, Chandlers Ford. Frith works in her studio every day at the gallery and part time in the afternoons as a picture framer.
In 2019 Frith reinstated a ceramic studio the Clay Garden at the gallery which will hopefully grow to support a ceramic business and a couple of pottery classes.
Shortly after the opening of the studio, in November 2019 Frith open a small tearoom called Clay Garden TeaRoom under the gallery and alongside the studio.
